February spotlight: Patient Safety — What happened to preventable harm at MLH?

By Sharon M. DiRienzo, RN, MSN, CPHRM, Director, Patient Safety and Risk Management

Over the past three years, Main Line Health has achieved a 78% reduction in preventable harm, thanks in large part to the dedication and commitment of our providers. The reduction has been driven by MLH’s Culture of Safety initiative, extending from classroom training to unit safety coaches and frequent recognition of individual efforts, and requiring a lot of work and attention to detail from clinicians across the System.

In order to support the Journey to Zero, a Patient Safety site was developed on the MLH intranet with information and materials supporting this effort. Access to the site is through a link on the homepage under Special Coverage. On the Patient Safety site are Culture of Safety training schedules, error prevention tools and job aids, information on Red Rules, safety videos, news from the hospital teams, Great Catch stories, and lots more.

The Patient Safety homepage is updated frequently to reflect current events or strategic focus. I welcome you to visit the site and provide feedback.  To access the Patient Safety site on the MLH intranet, click HERE (MLH logon will be required).
