Department of Medicine: Maintenance of Certification (MOC) Deadline

By Lawrence Livornese, MD, Chairman, Department of Medicine

The deadline to enroll in MOC is April 30, 2014. Anyone who does not register by that date will have the statement “Certified, Not Meeting MOC Requirements” next to their name on the ABIM webpage.   This requirement applies to all ABIM Certified physicians regardless of the time you were certified or even if you have a valid indefinitely (“lifetime”) certification.

Once registered for MOC, you will need to complete an MOC activity by December 31, 2015 to keep your status as “Meeting MOC Requirements.”  After that, you will be required to complete at least one MOC activity every two years.  By December, 2018, you will be required to complete a Patient Safety and Patient Survey requirement.

This is a significant change from prior policy.  It is an obvious end around to eliminate the valid indefinitely board certification status.  It appears that the ABIM now believes that lifetime certification or even an every 10 year recertification cycle is not adequate.

The cost to enroll is $1940 for Internal Medicine; $2,060 for Internal Medicine with a Focused Practice in Hospital Medicine; and $2,560 for any subspecialty.
