State Board of Medicine offering free CME course for health care professionals who prescribe ER/LA Opioids

Submitted by Kelly Henry, Director, Performance Improvement and Regulatory Affairs

The Hospital and Healthcare Association of Pennsylvania has provided the following information: Opioid abuse is considered a national epidemic, and Pennsylvania ranks in the top ten of states experiencing overdose deaths and overdose-related hospital admissions. Studies have shown that health care practitioner assessment and management of patient pain continues to be inadequate, while rates of misuse and abuse resulting in addiction, drug poisoning, and overdose deaths are rising.

The Pennsylvania Board of Medicine is presenting a free continuing medical education (CME) course on Extended-Release and Long-Acting (ER/LA) Opioid Analgesics Risk Evaluation and Mitigation Strategy (REMS). This course qualifies as FDA REMS compliant training, and will take place on September 16 from 9 a.m. until noon, at the Pennsylvania Convention Center at 1101 Arch Street in Philadelphia.

The board strongly encourages all health care professionals who prescribe ER/LA opioids to attend this course. Contact the board for additional information.
