Dr. Ross named Secretary General of IPA

Patrick Ross, Jr., MD, PhD, chairman of the Department of Surgery, MLH, was named secretary general of the International Photodynamic Association (IPA) at its World Congress Meeting in Rio de Janeiro.

The IPA focuses on the development of photodynamic therapy (PDT) and photodiagnosis in health care institutions around the globe. PDT is a medical treatment that utilizes special drugs, called photosensitizing agents, along with light, to kill cancer cells. In his leadership role, Dr. Ross will collaborate with the president and board of directors of the Association in developing a strategic plan to advance the mission of the Association.

At the meeting, Dr. Ross also served as a keynote speaker on “Photodynamic Therapy in Thoracic Oncology: A Pathway to Future Utilization” based on a study to develop a consortium of centers with active PDT programs to evaluate the indications and outcomes for this therapy.

With Dr. Ross’ arrival at MLH, the System will become the new coordinating facility for the multi-center registry and will continue to collect and share information related to PDT outcomes in an effort to advance its use on a global level.
