Below, please find this week’s summary of newly released information regarding the Papal Visit (September 25-27).

Employee Impact

  • For those sleeping over at the hospitals, information on specific plans for meals, accommodations, downtime activities and suggestions on what to pack is being developed and will be communicated shortly.
  • All MLH hospitals will be required to have some amount of additional staff and leadership presence on site during the Friday-Sunday period. Specific requirements will be determined by each hospital.
  • AT ALL TIMES during the week of the World Meeting of Families and Papal visit, all employees and medical staff should carry their ID badges with them.

Patient Care

  • Because of road closures and expected traffic congestion, several communications regarding service expectations are currently being developed for patients, including
    • Signage on all MLH campuses
    • A letter to all patients registered to give birth at any MLH hospital (A letter from Dr. Nancy Roberts, Chief of Obstetrics, to all OB/GYNs and Maternity Units across MLH is posted on the Prepping for the Pope landing page on the intranet.)
    • A letter to HomeCare & Hospice patients who may be impacted by road closures and traffic delays
    • Communications for lab customers regarding hours of operation and turnaround times

  • Philadelphia Mayor Nutter and representatives from the Delaware River Port Authority, Pennsylvania Department of Transportation, Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority, and others provided information about regional road closures and the city’s restricted traffic area (dubbed the “traffic box”) planned for the Papal Visit. A good source for this information is the 6ABC website.

  • Per the MLH Media Policy, please remember to direct any questions from the news media or general public to the Communications Team: Bridget Therriault, System Director, Communications, at 484.580.1025 or
  • The MLH Real Estate Operations Team is contacting practices in the MOBs to determine their plans for that weekend. Any MOB practice with questions or concerns should contact Lis Grossman, System Director of Real Estate, at 484.580.4475.
