SmartChart e-Prescribe: Meaningful Use Core Measure for 2017

By Don Klingen, CMIO, and Deb Laumer, Director, Clinical Informatics

Meaningful Use requirements for 2017 now require Eligible Hospitals (EHs) to report ePrescribe as a Core Measure.  In order to meet this Core Measure for 2017, SmartChart Discharge Medication Reconciliation will be configured with ePrescribe as the default setting effective May 9, 2017 (see Figure A).

Should the provider not wish to ePrescribe, by clicking Output in the Prescriptions section, a drop-down with other selections available will be presented (see Figure B).

For controlled substances, if ePrescribe is selected, a pop-up message will display requiring the provider to select the appropriate alternative in OUTPUT (i.e., handwrite or print, see Figure C).

Nurses and Pharmacists who perform Home Medication Collection upon patient admission to the hospital are also reminded to collect the patient’s preferred pharmacy to make ePrescribing a seamless process for the provider at the time of the patient’s discharge.

This new process will align with the upcoming process in EPIC, and will allow the MLH EHs to avoid a penalty for not meeting Meaningful Use in 2017.
