LMC: URGENT notice of IV Sodium bicarb shortage

Submitted by Robert L. Benz MD, FACP FASN, Vice President of Medical Affairs and Professor of Medicine, Lankenau Medical Center

Please be aware that we have but 6 days’ worth IV Sodium Bicarb available to us due to a national shortage that is predicted to  last weeks to months due to a producer quality issue.

Starting immediately, please limit all IV Na Bicarb use to emergent, urgent and non-futile situations.

If necessary and patient can take po or via NGT, please use oral form only. We may need to accept bicarb levels less than typically desirable.

Please note that this could become a dire situation soon, so act accordingly, as we could be without it all too soon.

Feel free to call with any questions.
