SmartChart Orders: Rate incorrectly recalculated for IV drip with weight-based dose when placed from Personal Favorites

By Don Klingen, CMIO, and Deb Laumer, Director, Clinical Informatics

As you may recall, with a recent SmartChart upgrade, weight-based dosing for IV Drips was introduced.  Cerner has issued a Customer Advisory Notice cautioning users not to save weight based dosing orders as “Personal Favorites.”  The reason for this is that the calculated rate field is incorrectly saved with a Personal Favorite for a IV Drip with a weight-based starting dose.

When this Personal Favorite is then later used to place an order for a different patient, the rate is the same as for the original patient instead of being recalculated based on the weight of the current patient. To avoid this problem, if you currently have any weight-based IV Drip Orders saved as Personal Favorites, be sure to discard them and use a new order each time the IV Drip Order is placed.
