Appointment of Joseph Gobern, MD, as System Chair, Obstetrics and Gynecology

I am very pleased to announce that Joseph Gobern, MD, MBA, FACOG, has accepted the position of System Chair, Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Main Line Health, effective July 17, 2017.   At the same time, I want to give special thanks to Norman Brest, MD, for ably serving as Interim Chair following the retirement of Nancy Roberts, MD, last December.

Dr. Gobern comes to Main Line Health from Novant Health WomanCare in Winston-Salem, NC, where he maintained a large clinical practice focusing on minimally invasive gynecologic surgery.  He was also on staff at the Maya Angelou Women’s Health and Wellness Center, Forsyth Medical Center in Winston-Salem, and served as a Clinical Associate Professor in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Uniformed Services University in Bethesda, Maryland. Prior to this, he was Chair of the Obstetrics and Gynecology Department at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in Bethesda, MD.

Dr. Gobern has been an OB/GYN surgeon since 1999. He is an expert in the area of gynecologic laparoscopic surgery and has presented on the topic both nationally and internationally. A retired Colonel in the US Army, Dr. Gobern devoted 29 years of service to the military and continues to serve as a consultant to the Army medical community. He is the recipient of numerous awards, including the Army Commendation Medal, Order of Military Medical Merit, and The Legion of Merit.

A graduate of Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences F. Edward Hebert School of Medicine, Dr. Gobern completed an OB/GYN residency at the San Antonio Uniformed Services Health Education Consortium, Wilford Hall Medical Center/Brooke Army Medical Center, San Antonio, Texas. His fellowship in minimally invasive gynecologic surgery was completed at Walter Reed Army Medical Center/Holy Cross Hospital in Washington, DC. He also received a master’s degree in Business Administration from the George Washington University School of Business.

With more than 17 years of health care experience in obstetrics and gynecology, his clinical expertise along with his administrative and academic experience will support the advancement of MLH’s clinical excellence in obstetrics and gynecology and reinforce our commitment to optimizing the health of the communities we serve.
