As part of our commitment to the Main Line Health community and our collaborative approach to cancer care, the Main Line Health Cancer Care program has announced the planned installation of a new, state-of-the-art Varian Edge linear accelerator at Bryn Mawr Hospital. The installation will take place over the next few months.
To make way for this latest advancement in radiation oncology, starting Monday, July 31, patients will be treated at the Bryn Mawr Hospital Cancer Center at Main Line Health Center in Newtown Square, located at 3855 West Chester Pike (only four miles from the hospital). The current location at Bryn Mawr Hospital will close temporarily.
The Varian Edge linear accelerator with multi-left collimation includes an Eclipse treatment-planning system that enables three-dimensional, conformal radiotherapy, intensity modulated radiotherapy, stereotactic radiotherapy, and stereotactic radiosurgery. Along with this new technology, we will also have a Rapid Arc treatment delivery system that significantly reduces the length of time that treatment is delivered, while also improving accuracy and patient comfort.
We intend to provide a seamless transition for our patients. During the upgrade, we will continue to provide inpatient consultations. All inpatients requiring radiation treatments will be transported to Paoli Hospital and Lankenau Medical Center via ambulance. The case management department will be working with our therapists and nurses to schedule these appointments.
Main Line Health Cancer Care recently received accreditation by the Commission on Cancer for the Integrated Network Cancer Program (INCP). Needless to say, we are proud of this distinction and the amazing work being done together at Main Line Health.
