All physicians, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, optometrists, perfusionists, CRNAs and pharmacists can now search the PA PDMP from within Epic before prescribing a controlled substance.
No longer will providers need to use a web browser to log into the PDMP and manually enter the patient’s identifying information.
The new PDMP integration is a single sign-on to launch the Pennsylvania PDMP’s web portal directly from Epic Hyperspace during an ambulatory encounter or during an emergency/hospitalization visit. After viewing the results, clinicians simply need to click that they reviewed the PDMP or were unable to view the results.
A smartphrase (.pdmpreviewstatusmlh- simply type .pdmp) can also be used to document in the note that the PDMP was queried.
Currently, querying the PDMP only searches the Pennsylvania PDMP. We have applied to New Jersey and Delaware to auto-search their PDMPs as well. When we are approved to do so, the process outline above will search all 3 at the same time.
The effort to bring this integration into Epic has been a priority for PIVOT over the past 6 months. We would like to thank everyone at PIVOT for all their hard work for assisting providers in combating the opioid crisis and simplifying the process to do so for all Main Line Health clinicians.
