This week’s STEEEP Huddle, contributed by Karen Fitzpatrick-Smith, manager, Organizational Development, HR, focuses on communicating respectfully in a diverse workforce and community. Diversity, Respect and Inclusion Learning Experience has been a course offered at Main Line Health to leaders and individual contributors since 2016. To date, 4500 MLH employees have attended and learned about using the word OUCH. A key ingredient to providing equitable, human care to our patients and each other is communicating respectfully in the workplace at every interaction. At times, colleagues make comments that are hurtful and offensive to others and aren’t quite sure how to respectfully acknowledge the negative impact of that word or phrase. All MLH employees are encouraged to say, OUCH then educate the person on why that phrase or statement hurt.
